Jerk Loves a Little Chill

Three Featured Wines to Pour with Jerk Chicken

At Jerk Fest, the obvious pairing is a cold Turk’s Head beer. It’s happening at the Brewery, after all, and few things work better with smoky, spicy jerk straight off the grill.

But jerk doesn’t stop when the festival ends.

Whether you’re making it at home, ordering it at a restaurant or picking it up from your favourite local spot, wine can be an excellent match too. The trick isn’t trying to overpower all that smoke, spice, char and heat. It’s finding bottles with enough fruit and freshness to keep up.

With the Turk’s Head Brewery Jerk Competition coming up as part of the Caribbean Food & Wine Festival, we went through this month’s Wine Cellar specials looking for three reds that naturally belong beside jerk chicken.

And yes, two of them are even better with a little chill.

Aliwen Pinot Noir — $11.25

Fresh, juicy and made for a little chill.

Aliwen Pinot Noir brings bright fruit, good acidity and a medium-bodied style that makes it an easy match for spicy food. Served around 14–15°C, it stays fresh and lively rather than feeling heavy alongside the heat of jerk chicken.

Best with: hotter, brighter jerk with plenty of Scotch bonnet and fresh spice.

Serving tip: Give it some time in the fridge before opening. In Turks & Caicos, “room temperature” is not what Pinot Noir has in mind.

Montes Alpha Pinot Noir — $18.75

A little more structure for the smoke and char.

Montes Alpha Pinot Noir combines fresh fruit and vibrant acidity with a subtle touch of oak, giving it enough depth to stand up to the smokier side of jerk without overwhelming the food.

Like the Aliwen, it shows particularly well slightly chilled, around 14–15°C.

Best with: smoky, herb-forward jerk with plenty of char.

Robert Mondavi Napa Valley Red Blend 2019 — $47.09

For the richer side of jerk.

This Cabernet-led Napa Valley blend brings blackberry, dried herbs, sweet tobacco and toasted notes, with a plush texture and polished tannins.

That makes it the bottle to reach for when the jerk moves away from pure heat and toward deeper caramelization, richer seasoning and a slightly sweeter glaze.

Best with: richer, sweeter jerk with plenty of smoke and char.

The Quick Rule

If your jerk is hotter, reach for the lighter Pinot.

If it’s smokier, move to the Montes.

If it’s richer and sweeter, bring out the Mondavi.

And with either Pinot, don’t be afraid of a little chill.

Taste the Real Thing at Jerk Fest

The annual Turk’s Head Brewery Jerk Competition returns Saturday, November 7, as part of the Caribbean Food & Wine Festival.

Expect jerk, competition, music and plenty of Caribbean flavour from 2–6 PM at Turk’s Head Brewery, with a couple cold Turk’s Head beers being the natural choice while you’re there.

For the next time jerk is on the menu at home or around the island, all three wines featured above are currently on October Special at The Wine Cellar, while stocks last.
